2124 World and Context of Mia's story
Midterm Presentation:
Paris Olympics
In 2124, Paris hosts the Olympic Games, a beacon of innovation where technology shapes everyday life, but not elite sports. Mia, a 30-year-old athlete with hemophilia, is the only competitor using medical technology. She relies on the VitaGuard, a patch that monitors her blood flow and injects clotting factors when needed. Though the patch allows her to compete, its presence raises questions of fairness, isolating Mia from her peers as the world watches.
Character
Mia is fiercely determined and driven, having fought through the limitations of her condition her entire life. The VitaGuard finally allows her to compete, but it leaves her doubting whether her success is truly hers. Mia struggles with feelings of isolation, as she is the only athlete relying on medical assistance. Lena, her childhood friend and fellow competitor, has always outrun her due to good health. While Lena wants to see Mia succeed, she stays silent as her coach, an arrogant and vocal opponent, files a formal complaint to have Mia disqualified. The coach’s actions push Mia further into isolation, making her question whether she belongs.
Story Development
Mia’s internal conflict revolves around her reliance on the VitaGuard. The external conflict arises when Lena’s coach challenges her participation, claiming the patch gives her an unfair edge. Public opinion is divided, and Mia is put under immense scrutiny. As the Olympic committee investigates, Mia faces growing doubt about whether she truly deserves her spot. Lena, torn between supporting Mia and following her coach, adds to the tension by staying silent.
Culmination and Outcome
In a public hearing, Mia defends her use of the VitaGuard, not as an enhancement but as a necessary tool to compete safely. The committee rules in her favor, allowing her to compete. Mia’s victory in the games proves that her success is the result of her hard work, not the patch. She accepts that the VitaGuard is part of her journey, not a shortcut. This decision also sets a precedent for future athletes with medical conditions to compete fairly.
Dialogue and Inner Monologue - Between Main Characters
Dialogue between Mia and Lena reveals their shared history and Lena’s internal struggle. Mia’s inner monologue explores her doubts and fear of being defined by her condition. These moments allow the audience to connect with Mia’s emotional journey, building empathy for her challenges.
Dialogue of the world: Public Opinion
- Supporters of Mia:
"Mia deserves a fair shot! It’s not about giving her an advantage—she’s just using the VitaGuard to level the playing field. She’s worked just as hard as any other athlete. Why should her condition hold her back?"
"We’re living in a world where tech is part of life. Why draw the line when it comes to health? She’s still the one doing all the running and training!" - Critics of Mia:
"Letting her use the VitaGuard opens the door for unfair competition. If she’s not performing purely on her own abilities, how is that fair to the others?"
"Technology is great for daily life, but in sports? It’s a slippery slope. Next, we’ll have enhancements and implants. Where does it end?" - Neutral Stance:
"It’s complicated. I feel for Mia, but sports have always been about natural human performance. Maybe the rules need to change, but is this the right way?"
